Owens Galliver Architects
Founded in 1992, we at Owens Galliver Architects are professional and friendly chartered architects based in the village of Pangbourne, in the Thames Valley between Reading and Oxfordshire. We work for a wide variety of clients who require creative, sensitive and practical design, and like the personal support of the architect, whether the project is their new house, an extension, a listed building or a mixed-use town centre scheme. Much of our work is in sensitive contexts, and often relates to buildings of great character and age.
Our services include: feasibility studies, planning and development consultancy, scheme design, construction drawings, technical reports and management of construction work.
Our work for private clients covers a very broad spectrum, from modest alterations to major re-modelling, from extensions of all sizes, to new houses. Often we are working on listed buildings or converted barns, and we frequently advise householders on the potential for new houses within their gardens.
The practice has been extensively involved in a variety of residential schemes including flats, individual housing groups, estate housing, conversions or existing commercial buildings, barn conversions and single new-build plots. We have extensive experience of commercial projects too, acting for major developers, funds & tenants, and working with the variety of other consultants that are necessary. Whilst working in the world of nett to grass ratios and efficient floor plans, we always try to create buildings that add to the local area, as well as providing a pleasant working environment and having the visual impact required by clients.
The practice has worked closely with a number of community organisations, offering support and explanation as well as the expected skills of the architect, We recognise the needs of the committees and volunteer groups unfamiliar with the building process, and helping where fund raising is a key element of the scheme.
We have worked on a number of schemes for the provision of affordable housing, working closely with the builder and client body, and offering support to the local community involved.
Working with listed buildings requires the right outlook. We have a considerable track record of beneficial approvals, based on an empathy with older buildings coupled with realism and good design. The key is to work with the building, understanding its history and workings, and its method and sequence of construction. Then one can begin to alter and extend in a manner which is compatible with its history and begin to contribute to its future as well.
